What is Fluid Friction?

Fluid friction is the friction that occurs when an object moves through a fluid (liquid or gas).

  • Friction in air → air resistance

  • Friction in water → water resistance

This friction opposes the motion of the object just like normal friction.

Fluid friction is also called drag.


Why Does Fluid Friction Occur?

Fluids (air, water) contain tiny particles.
When an object moves through a fluid, these particles hit against the object, slowing it down.
This opposing force is called drag.


Factors Affecting Fluid Friction

  1. Speed of the object

    • More speed → more drag

  2. Shape of the object

    • Broad or blunt shapes create more drag

    • Thin, smooth shapes create less drag

  3. Nature of fluid

    • Thick fluids (oil, honey) produce more drag

    • Thin fluids (air, water) produce less drag


Why Do We Reduce Fluid Friction? (Streamlining)

To move smoothly through air or water, objects are given streamlined shapes—narrow front and wider back.

Examples of Streamlined Shapes:

  • Cars → To reduce air resistance and increase speed

  • Airplanes → To cut through air smoothly

  • Fish → Naturally streamlined to swim easily

  • Birds → Streamlined bodies to fly with less air resistance

Streamlining helps save energy and increase speed.


Everyday Examples of Fluid Friction

  • A cyclist leans forward to reduce air resistance

  • A parachute slows down due to large drag

  • Boats have pointed fronts to move smoothly in water
