Advantages of Friction

Friction is very useful in our daily life. Without it, many activities would not be possible.

1. Friction helps us walk

When we push our foot backward, friction between the ground and our foot pushes us forward. Without friction, we would slip.

2. Friction helps vehicles move

Tyres grip the road because of friction. This grip allows cars, cycles, and buses to start, stop, and turn safely.

3. Friction helps in writing

Pens and pencils work because friction allows their tip to rub against the paper and leave marks.

4. Friction helps us hold objects

We can hold a book, bottle, or pen because friction provides grip between our fingers and the object.

Disadvantages of Friction

Although friction is useful, it also has negative effects.

1. Friction causes wear and tear

Shoes, tyres, machine parts, and tools become worn out over time because friction wears them down.

2. Friction produces unwanted heat

Machines get hot due to friction. This can damage machine parts and require cooling.

3. Friction wastes energy

Extra energy is needed to overcome friction. Vehicles use more fuel because friction opposes motion.

4. Friction slows things down

When friction is high, objects move slower. This is not always desired, especially in machines.
