Friction depends on several factors. These factors decide how much friction will act between two surfaces.
1. Nature of Surfaces
The roughness or smoothness of a surface affects friction.
• Rough Surfaces → More Friction
Rough surfaces have many irregularities.
When two rough surfaces touch, these irregularities interlock strongly, increasing friction.
Examples:

A brick surface creates high friction.

Sandpaper creates more friction than smooth paper.
• Smooth Surfaces → Less Friction
Smooth surfaces have fewer irregularities, so there is less interlocking and therefore less friction.
Example:

A ball rolls farther on a smooth marble floor than on a rough carpet.
2. Weight (Normal Force) on the Object
The heavier an object is, the more friction it experiences.
When weight increases:

The object presses harder against the surface.

Greater interlocking of irregularities.

Friction increases.
Examples:

A heavy suitcase is harder to pull than an empty one.

A loaded cart needs more force to move than an empty cart.
3. Surface Area (Does NOT Affect Friction)
Surprisingly, friction does not depend on the surface area of contact.
Even if you increase or decrease the area touching the ground, friction mainly depends on:

Nature of surfaces

Weight (normal force)
Example:

A block lying on its wider side or narrower side has almost the same friction.

A shoe and a slipper of the same weight create similar friction even if their areas differ.
Why?
Because friction depends on how strongly the surfaces interlock, not how wide the contact surface is.
